What are BFRBs?

Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) are “any repetitive self-grooming behavior that involves biting, pulling, picking, or scraping one’s own hair, skin, lips, cheeks, or nails that can lead to physical damage to the body and have been met with multiple attempts to stop or decrease the behavior” (TLC foundation). Hair-pulling (trichotillomania) and skin-picking (dermatillomania or excoriation disorder) are common types of BFRBs. Most people engage in these behaviors to some degree, but for some, BFRBs grow to a level of severity that results in pain, damage to the body, or social discomfort.

 

The good news is that there is treatment for BFRBs! While this tool is not a substitute for treatment with a trained, licensed clinician, it was created by a psychologist to be used either alone or in conjunction with treatment to manage troublesome BFRBs.

The Science of Lasting Change

Trich & Pick uses strategies from an evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral treatment for reducing BFRBs called Comprehensive Behavioral Treatment (COMB). This approach incorporates sensory, cognitive, emotional, motor, and location-related variables that are associated with your BFRB. Once common triggers are identified through self-monitoring and tracking, individualized prevention and replacement strategies can be incorporated. This fully customizable app is designed to be used either alone or in conjunction with COMB treatment.
